Singletrack by day, hot pools by night: it is no surprise this adventure-mad town is such a popular mountain biking destination.
The natural hot springs at the base of the Southern Alps may be the reason Hanmer Springs developed into a holiday destination but it’s now an adventure hub for skiing, rafting, walking and mountain biking. Soaking in thermal pools under a stary night is the best way to sooth well-used muscles while recounting the day's journey.
Start by dropping into the Hanmer Springs information centre and buying a trail map. Without it you will be lost in the maze of tracks. There are 20 tracks of varying difficulty with something to suit everyone. Try the recommended easy tracks and then head off around Conical Hill. You can easily spend a day exploring all the trails, and then branch out and ride the St James Cycle Trail the following day.
