In a prime location between Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks, this laidback little town is the perfect base for year-round outdoor adventures.
Sitting around 800 metres above sea level, this almost-alpine village commands spectacular views of across the volcanic plateau towards the mountain trio of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu.
Come summer or winter, the two national parks on its doorstep are major drawcards.
The town is a convenient setting off point for adventures in Whanganui National Park, including canoe trips on its mighty river and rides on the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail.
National Park Village also offers easy access to hiking trails in UNESCO-listed Tongariro National Park such as the Alpine Crossing and Tama Lakes, as well as a wide range of activities in its surrounds including mountain biking, rafting, quad bikes and the highest mini golf course in New Zealand!
The town buzzes in mid winter when snow transforms Mt Ruapehu into one of New Zealand’s best ski resorts. From National Park Village it’s just 20 minutes shuttle drive to Whakapapa, and 45 to Tūroa. Visitors can expect cosy lodges, ski shops and a fun, friendly après-ski scene.
