Fancy a dip in natural hot springs? Here’s where to take the waters in the beautiful region of Taupō.
During the winter months, a ‘hot pool holiday’ is the perfect way to revive body and soul.
Taupō offers one of the highest concentrations of thermally heated hot pools and hot springs anywhere in New Zealand – and some of the best spots are free or cost just a few dollars.
A local favourite is Taupō DeBretts Hot Springs, with heated indoor and outdoor pools - great for families. There's also full massage and spa facilities if you're looking to indulge.
If you're looking for a thermal soak and massage in a quiet setting, head to Wairakei Terraces. They have a stunning thermal outdoor area, complete with rockpools and waterfalls. Only open to those 14 and over, Wairakei provides a relaxing hot pool experience.
If you’d like to explore some of the region’s thermal pools without pulling out your wallet, you’re in luck. Head along to either the Lake Terrace or Spa Park Hot Pools and have a friendly local point you in the direction of the soothing warm waters on offer. Spa Park is where the Otumuheke Stream (hot river) merges with the mighty Waikato River. There is a walking track beside the stream - the higher you go, the hotter the pools get.
