Water sports and wine-tasting are two equally fun ways to enjoy the spectacular environment around Kurow, which sits at the junction of two rivers.
Kurow is centrally located in the middle of the Waitaki Valley and provides the base for many activities including watersports, camping, cycling and fishing. It is also well-known and popular for its wine.
The Waitaki Valley wine region - centred around Kurow - specialise in cool climate varieties. There are a number of producers, boutique labels and cellar doors for you sample these unique Waitaki wines. With the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail passing them all, Kurow is a great place to stop and savour the flavours. If you’d prefer to kick back, relax and enjoy a bit more wine, visit the local cellar doors. Just on the other side of Kurow is the first of the hydro dams and lakes – the Waitaki Dam and Lake Waitaki. Another 10 minutes up the road is the next dam, Aviemore Dam and of course, Lake Aviemore. Visitors can drive, walk or cycle across Aviemore Dam and this is also part of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.
Across the far side of Aviemore Dam is a lovely little walking track, Deep Stream Track. This is an easy short walk and excellent opportunity to stretch your legs, have a picnic, go fishing or have a swim.
There’s also a mini-mountain walk in Kurow up Kurow Hill. It’s a steep ascent but once at the top you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views of the Hakataramea Valley, Kurow township and the braided Waitaki River.
If you prefer a gentler stroll, have a wander through the Kurow Wetlands and on Kurow Island – easily accessed from the main road of town.
While in Kurow, don't forget to check out Kurow Museum and Information Centre - an interesting stop which provides great insights into local history and also offers general tourist information. It also pays homage to Richie McCaw – our beloved All Blacks legend who grew up in the area.
