Taupō's volcanic terrain and forested surrounds are a stunning setting for some of New Zealand's best and fabulously free-draining mountain bike trails.

The Taupō region, an IMBA Silver Ride Centre, is home to an impressive range of mountain biking trails. Mountain biking is a great year-round activity in Taupō as the trails stay rideable and dry, even in the middle of winter due to the free-draining pumice soil. The region was accredited by the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) as a silver level ride centre, which means that it is home to large-scale mountain biking facilities that cater to all levels.

The region is a cycle-friendly destination featuring part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail with the recently completed Great Lake Trail, and many other family friendly tracks like the Tongariro River Trail or the diverse Craters Mountain Bike Park. Exploring its many trails is a great way to take in the native forests, volcanic mountains, clear rivers and picturesque Lake Taupō - the largest lake in New Zealand. Riding the trails is easy, with several local operators offering bike hire, guiding and shuttle service throughout the region.
