Huka Falls

Discover the beauty and power of one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most-visited natural attractions.

The Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river, narrows dramatically at Huka Falls, generating enough power to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in just 11 seconds. The effect is mesmerising but loud. You’ll hear Huka Falls before you see them.

Complement your visit with an adrenaline-pumping jet-boat tour(opens in new window) to the base of the falls, where you’ll get close enough to feel the spray on your face. Or explore the area on the Spa Thermal Park to Huka Falls Walk(opens in new window), starting at the gentle thermal waters of Otumuheke Stream and leading to the thundering Huka Falls.

Getting there

Located just a five-minute drive from Taupō in the North Island, the falls are a short walk from the car park along a sturdy concrete bridge that crosses the rapids. From here, you can look down on the raging white water as it surges through the shallow gorge. There is no charge to visit the falls or use the car park.

Best time to go

Huka Falls is always spectacular, but they are even more dramatic after rain and in spring, when the snow melts. The increased water flow during these times makes the falls even more powerful and awe-inspiring.

Safety

Huka Falls is a body of water with very high pressure. Do not enter the water in or around the falls. This attraction is for viewing only. Always stay on designated paths and viewing platforms to ensure your safety.
