The Tarawera Trail is one of the most stunning day walks in New Zealand with access all year round. The Lake Tarawera area is steeped in cultural and geothermal history. The Pink and White Terraces regarded as the eighth wonder of the world were destroyed in the Tarawera eruption of 1886. 135 years on nature has fully healed this area to once again be one of the most beautiful landscapes in New Zealand. This is a moderate level walk for most age groups. The most popular choice is to walk in so you can reward yourself with a soak in the geothermal waters of Hot Water Beach, then catch the Water Taxi back.
