Our steam engine, Wa165 was built in New Zealand in 1897. Rescued from a play-ground in 1985, the Gisborne City Vintage Railway (GCVR) Society has restored the engine to full operating condition.
A 1936 passenger carriage was reconditioned and together with 3 specially converted carriages form the current steam train. Since October 2000, Wa165 has operated excursions to Muriwai, with a photo and picnic stop there of around 45 minutes, before returning to Gisborne. All departures are from the Gisborne Railway Station. The GCVR workshop is open to visitors on Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9am to noon, at the corner of Customhouse Street and Awapuni Road, Gisborne.
