Known for its mild weather and stunning coastal landscapes, the Coromandel Peninsula is the perfect place for walking and hiking.
There are numerous walks in the region and each one offers something different. The Coromandel Coastal Walkway is a top pick as it reaches quiet, idyllic spots at the top of the peninsula. On this walk it’s impossible to miss the amazing coastline and ocean views.
Further inland, the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway passes through the immense Karangahake Gorge and winds through old mining areas. It’s easy to get to and the river views will impress.
For a shorter, easier walk, try the Orokawa Bay Walk from Waihī Beach to Orokawa Bay. Meander along the coastal headlands before descending to the beach and nearby reserve. Experience the sandy golden beach with overhanging pohutukawa trees – a great place to linger and have a picnic with friends.
The Pinnacles Walk can be completed in a day or as an overnight trip. Retrace the steps of the early settlers all the way to the Pinnacles Hut, one of the highest peaks in the Coromandel Forest Park - it's especially dazzling first thing in the morning.
