Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is an ecological ‘island’ where you'll find native wildlife, plants and great walking trails.
The most popular walk in the reserve is the Southern Enclosure(Te Tuia a Taane). This family-friendly walk will appeal to all ages. Follow 5km of track as it winds through New Zealand forest and get up close with native birds such as kākā, peak inside the weta nest boxes, and climb the canopy viewing tower for a birds eye view of the forest below.
Signs with information are scattered along the track so you can find out more about the sights.
Surrounded by 47km of predator proof fencing, the reserve also includes the Tautari Wetlands area, home to native and ancient Tuatara and birdlife.
Find out more on the Sanctuary Mountain(opens in new window) website.
