Rich with wildlife and history Matiu/Somes Island is a great place to explore. Occupied by Maori for generations, the island also served as a quarantine facility and military defence point in the past.

The Matiu Loop track is an easy walk offering great views across the harbour to Wellington City, and the chance to see many native birds and insects in the wild.

Pause along the way to check out the island's many historic and ecological attractions, including the lighthouse, New Zealand's first harbour light built in 1866.

Getting there

  • A ferry runs between Queens Wharf and Days Bay to Matiu seven days a week and from Seatoun and Petone on weekends.

Facillities 

  • Toilets are found near the main wharf and behind the visitor centre (open between 8.30am and 5pm).
  • You'll need to bring your own food as there are no catering facilities.
