Enclosed by the pristine native forest of Te Urewera, Lake Waikaremoana is one of the North Island's most beautiful wilderness escapes.

Located within the boundaries of Te Urewera, Waikaremoana is a name that encompasses both the lake and the settlement. The beautiful lake, which is sometimes described as ‘an inland fiord’, was formed about 2,200 years ago by a huge landslide that blocked the Waikaretaheke River.

The track around its perimeter - one of New Zealand's Great Walks - takes three days to complete. A number of shorter walks begin close to Te Kura Whenua and the Waikaremoana Holiday Park(opens in new window). You can explore the lake by kayak or canoe, which are available for hire. Fishing is also an option – get a license from the campground store. Accommodation is generally basic, mostly cabins and camp sites.
