Daily Tour Times: 9:00 am, 12:00 pm, 3:00 pm – Bookings are recommended. Tour Duration: 2.5 hours return to Whataroa. Adult $150 - Student 12-17yrs $100 - Child 3-11 yrs $75 New Zealand family-owned and operated small business. Small, personalised group tours. Friendly, experienced, and knowledgeable local guides. Suitable for all ages and abilities; assistance is available. Operates rain or shine, quality wet weather gear provided if raining. Private and large group tour options are available.
A valid credit card is required to secure bookings. Credit card details will be held without charge pending visitor arrival. There will be no charge to the credit card provided we receive 24 hours’ notice of cancellation of the tour booking. In the event of a late cancellation or non-arrival, a charge equivalent to the full tour cost may be charged to the credit card. If you need to amend your tour reservation due to weather or other reasons, we will do our best to accommodate your request.
Our exclusive 2.5-hour White Heron Tour begins with a scenic minivan journey through private farmland and wetlands to the DOC-protected Waitangiroto Nature Reserve. Here, an easy 800-metre guided walk through ancient Kahikatea rainforest leads to our elevated viewing hide, offering the unique opportunity to observe the rare Kōtuku or White Heron in their natural nesting environment. Be captivated by these majestic birds as they interact and nurture their young. Also view and learn about the nesting Royal Spoonbill, Little Shag, and other birdlife here. As the original and only tour company permitted to operate in this special area, White Heron Sanctuary Tours has 37 years of experience in sharing the magic of the Kōtuku with visitors.
