The small fishing town of Moeraki was used by Europeans as an early whaling station and today it is home to many residents, with a lot of options for travellers including the Moeraki Haven Motel, Moeraki Beach Motel and Moeraki Village Holiday Park.
Treat yourself at the internationally renowned Fleurs Place(opens in new window), an idyllic, rustic and most-charming restaurant right on the waterfront or visit what Moeraki is most synonymous with, The Moeraki Boulders; large, spherical, stones which were formed around 60 million years ago and are strewn along Koekoehe Beach. This is just a 5 mins drive from Moeraki Village.
Help the likely over-indulgence at Fleurs with a saunter along the beach, some fun at the playground, journey to the lighthouse and see the penguins or stroll along the Millennium Walkway at your leisure.
The Millennium Walkway can be walked in either direction and spans from the lookout in Moeraki village, heading past Puke Mataa old pā site, rustic wharves, fishing boats along beautiful beaches around One Kakara to Millers Bay and beyond. There are steps seats and stiles along the track with an info kiosk at each end and information in places along the way. It’s another 1.7km walk along the beach to the Moeraki Boulders.

Moeraki is often visited by seals and dolphins – especially Hector’s dolphins. If you’re really lucky you may even spot orca which have been seen many times off Moeraki.
