Grade 2–3 |Easy - Intermediate
This fast and flowing single-track mountain biking circuit has million-dollar views of the mighty Clutha / Mata-Au River and Wānaka Basin.
Purpose-built by an avid local mountain biker, this one-way circuit sees both racers and recreational riders swoop in for grippy, flowing curves and fun jumps with super-fine scenery on the side. Mostly cut into a river terrace high above the Clutha River / Mata-Au, this is one of the many New Zealand mountain biking trails that is blessed with epic vistas up and down stream of snow-capped peaks and plains.
From the trailhead at a low-key campground in Albert Town, near Wānaka, this mountain biking trail hops across Rabbit Flat before zigzagging up a short but serious set of switchbacks to the view-filled Deans Bank. From here the trail noodles, swoops and sprints through exotic forest and a scrubby landscape of tussock and spiky matagouri.
The beauty of this New Zealand mountain biking trail – beyond its obvious physical charms – is the broad appeal of its terrain. Advanced bikers can max-out the adrenaline buzz on speedy corners and obstacles, while beginners and intermediates can hone their skills on a confidence-boosting surface, testing a few limits along the way.
Everyone will enjoy the grand finale – a thrilling downhill (with optional jumps) back down to Rabbit Flat where a serious decision has to be made – climb back up for another lap, or retire to Wānaka for some well-earned refreshment. It’s just an hour away by bike via the pretty Wānaka Lakeside Trails.
Enjoy the freedom of riding without the hassle of logistics by taking a guided or self-guided mountain bike tour.
Few countries in the world serve up such diverse riding – from urban forest trails to rugged, remote mountaintop tracks. Plan to stay safe and savour them.
