Explore the scenic beauty of Taupō with lakes, mountains and geothermal wonderlands in backdrop when you hike or walk on one of the region's trails.
The clear waters of beautiful Lake Taupō are the ideal backdrop for a lakeside stroll - walk between Little Acacia Bay and Rangatira Point or stop for a lakeside picnic along the Great Lake Walkway between Two Mile Bay and Five Mile Bay. The all-season Great Lake Trail is 71km (44m) and wraps around the forested shores of the lake. Base yourself in Kinloch or access the trail by shuttle from Taupō township. The trail can be broken up into smaller sections, so you can enjoy a short walk over an hour or a morning hike.
If you're seeking a geothermal experience, head to Craters of the Moon - a valley of boiling mudpools and hissing steam with a boardwalk suspended above.
This region is also home to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, often labelled as 'one of the world's best day walks'. Journey past ancient lava flows, an active volcano crater, turquoise green lakes and panoramic views of the Central Plateau on this 19km (11.8m) day hike.
