Hooker Valley Track, Aoraki Mt Cook, Christchurch - Canterbury

The Hooker Valley Track is the most iconic walk in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. So, if you only have time to do one walk, this should be the one.

This winding 10km track follows the Hooker Valley floor to Hooker Lake and generally takes 3-4 hours to complete, including the return. Highlights include views of Mueller Glacier and Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. In Spring, walkers will glimpse the Mount Cook buttercup, the world’s biggest buttercup.

Getting there

Begin your walk at the Visitor Centre or White Horse Hill campground/carpark (at the end of Hooker Valley Rd off State Highway 80).

Need to know

Weather can change quickly in alpine environments so be prepared for variable weather conditions.

Preparation

This track requires the right preparation including sturdy footwear, warm and waterproof clothing, sun protection, food and water. In winter months, walking poles and micro-spikes are recommended. 

When to go

The Hooker Valley track is open all year round. In winter, alpine tracks around the South Island can be inaccessible due to avalanche risk, but Hooker Valley Track is generally safe. Check the NIWA weather forecast(opens in new window) before you go.

Hooker Valley Track can become very icy in shaded areas and extremely slippery during winter. Microspikes and hiking poles are recommended.
